Thanks to the generosity of MadLab Theatre and Gallery collaboration, Ohio Art League is able to exhibit some of our members in the gallery space! From October 16 through November 1, you can catch CCAD Fine Arts student Austin Burnside’s Blue Molly exhibition.

The Opening Reception for Blue Molly takes place this Friday, Oct. 17 from 5 to 7 in the evening at MadLab Gallery in Downtown Columbus.

Stop by this month to see Burnside’s use of industrial materials and how he combines them with his “knowledge of building to bring a new light in an unconventional and mostly corky manner.”

"My work is more about the materials. My motivations for these works deals with labor and ingenuity. I want these pieces to talk about the livelihood for blue-collar men and women by using their trades to describe their personality and who they are beyond face value. I engineer these sculptures and paintings to become fun, intriguing, or unique to describe more of a complex situation in a simplistic understanding of materials and gravity." -AB

For those of you who have friends that are not yet OAL members, give them a listen to what Austin had to say about us!

"As a young artist it is hard to get show opportunities outside of CCAD corporal limits. I expressed my concerns with my professors and one of them recommended me to Ohio Art League. I signed up to it and had an exponential rate of show opportunities. This organization has helped get my artwork out into the greater Columbus area and I am grateful for it."

Thanks for your support, Austin! Good luck at MadLab!

OAL member artists Audrey Crone and Amy Hipple have exhibited at several of our events throughout the years, and now they’re doing us one more solid by donating some works to our One Night Live Auction! Both of which, among all the others, are available for purchase at the event on October 10 at Strongwater Spirits and Gallery Space in Franklinton.

If you haven’t yet, get your tickets today

Ohio Art League member Amy Hipple is an art instructor with FCBDD and has been working in stained glass since 1978. “I fell in love with the medium while on a field trip to Franklin Art Glass in 1970, and returned to work there before starting my career as an artist,” says Hipple. ”After working at Highlights for Children for 22 years, I received my teaching certificate and Masters of Education at Ohio Dominican University, and have been teaching students with disabilities ever since.” Check out Summer Glass Puddle above!

Aubrey Crone‘s Badass Betty (above) has made her niche in the artistic community, that’s for sure. You’ve probably seen her in some of our Member-Curated Exhibitions or, most definitely, our most recent Spring Juried Exhibition. Audrey P. Crone holds a Master’s Degree in Communication Designs from Pratt Institute in New York and is a Thai-Chinese New Yorker who currently resides in, that’s right, Columbus, Ohio. You can find Betty and her creator at One Night this Friday!

As you know, our One Night fundraising event of the year is approaching! October 10 will be here before we all know it, and to get in the spirit of tributing our fine members and their handwork, we at OAL would like to showcase the works by members and esteemed artists Brian Riegel and Barbara Vogel this afternoon.

Vogel received a B.F.A. And M.F.A. from the Ohio State University and was part of OAL's 100th anniversary exhibit at the Riffe Gallery and the recipient of an Ohio Arts Council individual Excellence Award! She is represented by Sherrie Gallery, is a member of CAW, and a trustee at the Ohio Designer Craftsman Museum. You may remember her impression and honorary award at our Ohio Made festival on Sept. 27. One of her One Night works, Flattop, is featured above left.

Recently, Brian Riegel had 18 works on display at Port Columbus Airport, won “best in show” at OAL’s Ohio Made (piece on display at Ohio History Center until Oct. 20th), and was featured in Sept. 2014 issue Stock and Barrel magazine. This winter, Riegel’s body of work will be on display at Cleveland Hopkins Airport. The artist states that his work often "evokes nostalgia as one recognizes familiar items from the past, and the composition forces viewers to see the familiar pieces as something mysterious, new and unfamiliar." Riegel's "favorite challenge is to take peoples’ once beloved, ... outmoded objects and create something valuable that requires them to see the objects with a new perspective." His evaluation of his work is evident in the piece Celtic Chain Drive displayed above right.

Both works will be available for purchase at the Live Auction, October 10 (next Friday!) at Strongwater Spirits and Gallery during our One Night event! Don't forget to get your submissions in by MONDAY Oct. 6 at 11:59 PM!

We know how great you members are, so in spirit of Tribute, we want to show you how much! Each day until October 10, we will be showcasing a few of the artists who have donated work(s) to the One Night Live Auction!

Get your submissions in, you guys! The deadline for submission is October 6!!! That's 5 days away! It's a great opportunity to help out the OAL as well as promote yourself to art collectors and head-haunchos throughout the community. Plus, we love to see what you're working with!

Today, we're highlighting member-artists Andy Hudson and Erica Gilbert!

One of the founding members of Glass Axis and 20-year-veteran of the Ohio Art League, Andy Hudson is a retired OSU Medical Educator, an artist, art collector and glassblower. As we’re sure you’ve seen his work around (and out of) town, now is your chance to own one of his one-of-a-kind fire drawings like Saroon featured above left!

OAL member-artist and COSI‘s own Erica Gilbert paints mostly landscapes of places she has traveled and is inspired by light and color in nature. She has an M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education and a studio art minor. Let her soft, nature-inspired works breathe life into your home and bid on her works at One Night! Check out her oil painting Venice as seen to the right above!
