"It should be of no surprise to anyone that the environmental discussions in the last Based on historical data, environmental experts forecast record numbers of fires around the world. In the U.S., this is evidenced by the number of fires occurring in California since 2017. Most notably, California reported historical record fires in years 2017 and 2018, and in all subsequent years, California reported the worst yearly U.S. fires. California's largest fires in years 2019-2022 include the Kincade Fire (2019), the August Complex Fire (2020), the Dixie Fire (2021), and in 2022, the Mosquito Fire. |
Considering what I believed would be a continuing occurrence, in April 2022, I adapted my traditional painting style of environmental settings to include cadmium red skies. My first set of paintings as part of my Red Sky series consists of a group of 6 watercolor paintings (9"x12"). Shortly after finishing the watercolor pieces, I began painting oil versions (24"x24" linen on board) of my Red Sky series. (May of 2022, 24"x24" linen on board). In July 2023, I saw two pictures posted on social media as viewed from New York of the Red Skies caused by the fires occurring in Canada's 13 provinces and territories. In 2024, I designed personalized stained glass windows to place in front of each of my paintings. The combination of my paintings with cadmium red skies and red stained glass windows presents an eerie reminder of the red skies as seen from New York in the summer of 2023, approximately one year after I started my Red Sky series." |
